The owner wanted to blend the quiet, harmony and hand-crafted detail of the traditional Japanese style with contemporary minimalism and modern construction techniques. The size of the home was doubled, without changing the height or impacting the surrounding neighborhood views. The house is small and the construction budget was tight, so the details and budgets were closely monitored. Not an inch was wasted; all available space was converted to storage or expanded into essential living space. Custom metal fabrication, exposed concrete, and wood details are artfully balanced inside and out. Lockhart|Suver has continued working closely with the homeowner over the years on smaller projects, recently building a deck and an Iron Wood (Ipe) fence, to complete the spirit and quality of the home.
